Elise and Jeff moved so slowly and gradually towards announcing their inevitable 
engagement, telegraphing every move, that it was not much of a surprise that it 
would happen. So about 4 months before they finally announced it, I wrote this. 
I did not show it to them until the eve of their wedding

I cannot believe my ears or my eyes
You're getting engaged - oh what a surprise!
You kept such a secret, we hadn't a clue
Who'd have suspected it's a thing you would do?
We've heard you share quarters and sleep in one bed
It makes sense you're planning one day to get wed.
We'll learn long after its quite plain to see
That you have raised a large family
But we'd sure like to know before we are
