Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment

GLOBE Program at the City College of New York

GLOBE is an international inquiry-based science and education program that unites students, educators, and scientists in study and research about the dynamics of the Earth's environment.

Over a million GLOBE students located in over 100 countries are taking important environmental measurements and share them through an international database. Their data are used in their own research activities by other students and also by scientists around the world.

The goals of the program are to a) increase scientific understanding of the Earth systems, b) Enhance the environmental awareness of individuals worldwide, c) improve student achievement in science and mathematics as well as 4) promote local and international collaborations.

At City College, we work with NYC teachers, science coordinators, and GLOBE headquarters to adapt standard GLOBE protocols to the urban environment.

NYC SCHOOLS SPIRAL CURRICULUM

Globe curriculum materials for middle school are currently been integrated in the NYC middle school science spiral curriculum to support students learning and understanding of Earth Systems Science.

When asked what he valued in his own work, Samuel Backett replied:

"What I don't understand"

TRAINING

we incorporated the GLOBE training in the in-service teacher preparation courses to better support our science education graduates in exploring and learning:

  • about the program
  • its science content and
  • the pedagogy of teaching Environmental System Science

ON-GOING PROJETCS

PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS INITIATIVE NASA-AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM

Globe curriculum materials for middle school are currently been integrated in NASA Explorer Schools

GREENPROOFING

Globe curriculum materials for high school are currently been integrated ithe Greenproofing training that fosters environmentalism through the installation of green roofs and train environmentally interested teachers to lead green roof classes and after-school clubs.
