Clinical Cases
In this section, we will post several clinical cases during each block of the course.
Cases will be related to the current block of the curriculum. They are designed to be
challenging and to help you develop a working knowledge of (1) the variety of
microorganisms that cause infections; (2) immune responses to infections; and,
(3)
immunopathologies including hypersensitivity reactions.
We will provide you with a set of learning objectives for
each of the clinical cases presented on our web site. It is expected that you will have a
solid working knowledge of these learning issues following the small group session in
which the case is discussed. Our goal is to encourage more active learning and
problem-solving by students. Cases will be valuable not only during your Step
8 course but also in helping you review for the Part I Examination of the National Board of Medical Examiners
The cases are presented as vignettes followed by several questions. You should study each
case using appropriate resources (e.g. textbooks, appropriate Internet links, see Resources
section of this web site) or direct Internet links noted in case
descriptions, then attempt to answer the questions. We will discuss the answers to the
questions during scheduled small group exercises (see course Schedule
). Answers to case questions will be posted on the clinical case page the day
following the scheduled Small Group Discussion sessions.
