These problems will make sense only if you read your lab manual.
You cannot start the lab without completing the questions for the lab.
Try to use these questions to connect the problems we do in class to the lab experiment.

Expt 2: Air track

You have an air track that is 1.5 m long.
>>>> What is an air track? _____

You use a block that is 3 cm high under one end of the air track. This makes the air track into an inclined plane.
>>>>How many meters is 3 cm? __

>>>>Draw a picture showing the air track inclined plane.
>>>>Put the length, height, angle on your diagram.

>>>>What is the angle that the air track now makes with the horizontal? ____

From what height does the ball fall as it rolls down the track which is 1.5 m long and 3 cm high?
>>>>That is what is the y component of the displacement? ____

>>>>What is the acceleration of the glider as it moves down the incline? _____

>>>>How long will it take the glider to get from the top to the bottom of the track? ____

Repeat these questions for a 6cm block inserted under one end of a 1.5 m long air track.

How many meters is 6 cm? ____

What angle does the track now make with the horizontal? ___

What is the height through which the ball falls? ____

What is the acceleration of the glider? ____
How long will it take the glider to reach the bottom? _____

Expt 3: Atwood Machine

1) You have an unbalanced force of 5 g acting on a mass of 2500g. What is the acceleration? ______

2) You have 2 weights attached to a string hung over a frictionless bar (see diagram page 27 of lab manual). Mass 1 is 2500 g.

If Mass 2 is 2501 g what is the acceleration? ____
If Mass 2 is 1995 g what is the acceleration? _____
If Mass 2 is 2505 g what is the acceleration? ____
If Mass 2 is 1990 g what is the acceleration? _____
If Mass 2 is 2510 g what is the acceleration? ____
If Mass 2 is 2500 g what is the acceleration? ____

Make a graph of the acceleration vs. the mass of 2.
Make a graph of the acceleration vs. the difference between Mass 1 and Mass 2.

Expt 4: Centripetal force

1) If it takes 50 s for an object to carry out 30 revolutions, what is the period of rotation? (USE THIS SPEED FOR QUESTIONS 2 & 3)

2) What is the velocity of an object 10 cm from the center of rotation?

3) What is the centripetal force on a 70 gm mass spinning 10 cm from the center of rotation?

Expt 5: Linear Momentum

1) How fast will a ball be going after falling 32 cm (no friction)?

2) A ball has an x velocity equal to the y velocity found in part 1.
How far ( in the x direction ) will it travel as the ball falls 32 cm?
Draw a diagram describing the motion of this ball.

Expt 6: Buoyancy

You have a 29 cm3 block of Al (2700 kg/m3) on a string.

What is the tension in the string that suspends the block if the block is suspended in:

1) In vacuum

2) In air

3) In water

Expt 7: Elasticity

1) Fill in the table and make of plot of the displacement (x) vrs the mass (m) for a spring with a force constant of 230 N/m

mass
x
100g
200g
300g
500g
1000g

2) Sketch the harmonic motion (position (x) as a function of time) for a spring where A= 0.04 m and the period is 0.55 s.
