A Sample Leader Orientation Program

  Individual sign-in sheet

Depending on scheduling leaders should complete the Felder online questionnaire either before or during the orientation.

Icebreaker used: Two people interview each other, find two things they have in common, then
each introduces the other to the group. Each person mentions one thing they have in common.

Exercise: Groups of 6-8 participants are assigned a word, and record as many definitions as
possible for that word on newsprint, which is then posted. The words are: PEER, LEADER, TEAM, and LEARNING.
If there are more than four groups, more than one group defines each word.  A reporter from each group then reports to the whole audience.

"Sally" problem (from Whimby and Lockhead). Each participant is asked to solve the problem,
then methods of solving it are compared.

Demonstration of a workshop: Led by an experienced peer leader, groups of 6-8 participants work on Dalton's Postulates. Red, white and black beans are used to represent atoms.

(After lunch) Each participant is asked to write on a vivid learning experience. This serves to introduce the idea of journal-writing.

Leader concerns: In groups of 6-8, new peer leaders write their concerns on newsprint, which is then posted. A reporter from each group explains the list.
Discussion: the large group works to group the concerns and note the similarities among them.
Experienced peer leaders then lead a discussion of suggestions to handle the situations and concerns.
