COMPUTER LABS

There is a wide range of technology facilities that support teaching and learning in the Science Division, including a number of computer-equipped labs managed by Science Computing Services, which are listed below. For the most part, use is limited to scheduled classes and labs, and to students working on class assignments for Division of Science courses.

Note to faculty: To use or reserve Computer Classrooms, you must contact the room coordinators in advance. Link to the Science Division Computer Lab.

Portable Laptop Cart (12 laptops)

There is a special portable cart with 12 laptop computers available for use by faculty in the Science Division for classes involving students using computers.

The laptops are kept together as a SET and not lent out as single units. That means that they are not meant to be used for PowerPoint presentations by the instructor; (each department has equipment to support that kind of need.) Other guidelines are that they are not for research or general computing, and cannot be used off-campus (including not at home or at any other CUNY campus.

Please note that if a set of computers is needed for extended periods, depts should reserve and use one of the standard computer classrooms, as appropriate, such as the Science Computer Room in J-044/45.

They have both wired and wireless ethernet capabilities. We have a wireless access hub that we can use to connect them to the Internet.

ORIENTATIONS / RESERVATIONS / SETUPS

Instructors need to be able to plan ahead. Here are reservation guidelines for the laptop cart.

  • Requests need to be reviewed and approved by the Manager of Science Computing Services (or designee).
  • We require at least 1 week notice.
  • Instructor orientation is required to use the laptops!
  • Departments will be responsible for picking up, setting up, and returning the laptops, and maintaining them in a secure mannerSCS staff will handle any network setup as needed.
  • Because they were originally purchased by the College for the Physics Department, Physics has 'first call', but *only* if they reserve them a month in advance; in all other cases, requests will be on a first-come, first- served basis.
