Web Pages

Science Computing Services manages the Science Division Web Server, an Apache web server running on the Science UNIX host (the host is called sci250.sci.ccny.cuny.edu).

Most of the official Science Division web pages are on this server. The Division of Science web site is: www.sci.ccny.cuny.edu. Science Computing Services staff maintain some of the 'official' pages, and some are maintained by other faculty and staff in the Science Division.

Anyone with an account on the UNIX host can create their own 'individual' web site; it will have the address: www.sci.ccny.cuny.edu/~accountname. To create your web site, in your home directory create a subdirectory called public_html, and then create, copy, or upload web pages and other appropriate files. The name of the default 'start page' is index.html.

These 'personal' web pages are an easy way to create a web presence for you and/or your research lab, or to support your teaching activities. Note that these pages are housed on an official College Science Division web server, with a College web address; thus, they must be non-commercial in nature, and should be consistent with the College's goals and mission.

We can provide some 'getting-started' guidance for those developing web pages; please contact Science Computing Services for an appointment.

Interactive web pages: Adding interactvity with Perl or PHP is supported on the Science Division Web Server. CGI scripts must be submitted in advance and approved by Science Computing Services; to ensure compliance with this, CGI scripts will only run from a restricted directory location. Any attempt to avoid this requirement may result in termination of accounts and/or other disciplinary action.
