| Research Rotations for Prospective Ph.D. students | ![]() | ![]() |
| The main goal of a lab rotation (one month for the CUNY Chemistry program, two months for Biochemistry) is to get a flavor for the type of science we do, the dynamic of our research group, and what careers our students pursue after they graduate. Your activities will include a selection of the following: Overexpress and purify a protein from E. coli cells, purify biopolymers from fruit cuticles or fungal melanins, conduct and analyze 600 MHz NMR experiments in solution or solid state, try HPLC and/or MS to separate a plant metabolite mixture. Give a 15-min PP presentation to our research group on a published article, your prior M.S. research, or your rotation labwork. Write a 1-page report on someone else's group meeting presentation. Read a recent publication from our group, then write a 1-page summary of the major findings and a follow-up question you would like to address. Do a literature search to assist someone in the group (who will show you how to do it). Do a survey of 'junior' and 'senior' group members about their research projects, accomplishments, challenges, and career plans.
