When to Submit: By March 1
What To Submit: *Application for Admission form *International Students Packet *Financial Assistance form In addition, you should arrange for the following: *Transcript request - to be mailed to the applicant's previously attended college or university. Ask that the transcripts be returned to you and include them in your application package. *Two letters of recommendation. Ask those writing letters of recommendation to place the letter in a sealed envelope, write their name across the back, and return to you for inclusion in your application packet. *Also, please request copies of your scores for the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) exams including the GRE General tests and the GRE Subject Test in Physics, and - for foreign students - the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) exam. These should be included with your application. In case you take the exams late, you can submit the TOEFL scores later.
A student seeking admission to the Ph.D. program must have a recognized bachelor's degree, received a minimum average of B (GPA of 3.0 out of 4) in undergraduate physics and mathematics courses, and have taken enough courses in these fields to indicate that he or she will profit from graduate study. An applicant with a master's degree in physics will also be considered for admission. The prospective graduate student should take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), both the general tests and the Subject Test in Physics. Applicants should take these examinations by February for Fall admission. An applicant who only partially fulfills the above requirements may be considered for admission into the master's degree program provided he or she shows potential to succeed in graduate work. Such cases are judged on an individual basis; special situations will be considered. A student who is successful in the M.A. program may later apply to the doctoral program, obtaining full credit for the work already completed.
Graduates of foreign colleges or universities with "lower doctorate" degrees, such as "Doctorat de Troisime Cycle" or "Diploma di Perfezionamento" are eligible for admission and may obtain advanced standing. Applicants who have not studied in an English-speaking country must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), administered internationally by the Education Testing Service (ETS).
Results must be reported directly from ETS to:
The Registrar's Office The City University Graduate Center 365 Fifth Avenue New York, NY 10016 However, students should request that a copy of the scores be sent to them and should be included in the application package that is sent directly to theOffice Manager at City College.
