Admission

A student seeking admission to the Ph.D. program must have a recognized bachelor's degree, received a minimum average of B in undergraduate physics and mathematics, and have taken enough courses in these fields to indicate that he or she will profit from graduate study. An applicant with a master's degree in physics will also be considered for admission. The prospective graduate student should take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), both the general test and the separate physics exam. Applicants should take these examinations by February for Fall admission or July for Spring admission. An applicant who only partially fulfills the above requirements may gain admission into the master's degree program providing he or she shows potential to succeed in graduate work. Such cases are judged on an individual basis; special situations will be considered. A student who is successful in the M.A. program may later enter the doctoral program, obtaining full credit for the work already completed.

Foreign students should meet standards equivalent to those described above to be considered for admission. Graduates of foreign colleges or universities with "lower doctorate" degrees, such as "Doctorat de Troisime Cycle" or "Diploma di Perfezionamento" are eligible for admission and may obtain advanced standing. Applicants who have not studied in an English-speaking country must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), administered internationally by the Education Testing Service (ETS).

Results must be reported directly from ETS to:

The Registrar's Office
The City University Graduate Center

365 Fifth Avenue
New York, NY 10016
