Distinguished Professor Myriam P. Sarachik has been awarded the coveted
Oliver E. Buckley Condensed Matter Physics Prize for 2005 by the American
Physical Society. The prize, established in 1952, was endowed by AT&T Bell
Laboratories (now Lucent Technologies) in memory of Oliver E. Buckley, an
influential president of Bell Laboratories.
The prize, consisting of a $5000 award, recognizes outstanding theoretical
or experimental work in condensed matter physics. Professor Sarachik will
share the 2005 prize with Gabriel Aeppli of the University College, London
and David Awschalom of the University of California - Santa Barbara.
The award recognizes her "For fundamental contributions to experimental
studies of quantum spin dynamics and spin coherence in condensed matter
systems."

Dr. Myriam Sarachik, Distinguished Professor of Physics at the City College
of New York (CCNY) has been named the 2005 L'OREAL-UNESCO for Women
in Science North American Laureate. She was recently honored at a special
ceremony in Paris, France. The award carries $100,000 dollar cash prize.
Initiated in 1998 to elevate the role of women in the scientific community
by highlighting and rewarding their contributions, the prestigious
L'OREAL-UNESCO Awards are presented annually to five established scientists
