Yoshi, why did you choose CCNY over other schools?
First, CUNY schools are financially affordable. Second, I was suffering from hepatitis for a long time, and hospitalized for months to receive chemotherapy. I thought that it would be rewarding if I become a physician and help people who suffer from diseases. CCNY has an excellent Pre-Med program in which roughly 60% of Pre-Med students go to medical school each year.
Why did you choose chemistry as your major?
After my freshman year, my goal shifted from being a physician who treats patients to a scientist who understands the mechanism of drugs at molecular and atomic levels. It occured to me that chemistry is a good choice.
What was your experience at CCNY? What is the quality of education you have received?
The chemistry department and the science division at CCNY have excellent special programs to support students' success. City College Academy For Professional Preparation, CCAPP, for one. The general and organic chemistry workshop program for another. Both programs provide students not only learning opportunities, but also teaching opportunities. Besides those benefits to students, many faculty members are very supportive, friendly, and encouraging. They make me proud that I am one of the members of CCNY community. Regarding the quality of education, I can say one thing. During the last few months, I visited many graduate schools to select the best school for me. At those places, I met many other prospective students from universities, including top-rated schools, and talked about chemistry and related subjects. I felt that I know chemistry as much as they do - if not better.
Why are you going to graduate school?
I like to be challenged intellectually. It is natural for me to go to graduate school, so I will be able to conduct cutting-edge research.
What are your plans for your future career?
I would like to conduct independent research that reflects my interests. For this reason, I would like to become a researcher and/or a professor at an academic institution.
