Special Programs and Services

CCAPP - City College Academy for Professional Preparation

Students majoring in chemistry are encouraged to join CCAPP as early in their college careers as possible. CCAPP offers early registration and counseling, group tutorial workshops in all introductory and elective science courses, internships, and referral to research programs. For additional information, contact the CCAPP Advisor:

Ms. Connie Harper (212) 650-6087

The Department shares institutional grants devoted in part to undergraduate research. From the National Institutes of Health (NIH), we receive funding for the following programs:

Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC)
Minority Biomedical Research Support (MBRS)
College Research Scholars (CRS)

We also receive funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for the

Center for the Analysis of Structures and Interfaces (CASI)

Potential research students are urged to contact the grant administrators:
MARC, MBRS, CRS Professor M. M. Fishman (212) 650-6601
CASI Professor Daniel Akins (212) 650-6953

The Department also participates in a Research Center in Minority Institutions (RCMI) grant from NIH. City College is one of only four Minority Research Genters of Excellence in the United States.

Tutoring Services

Extensive tutoring services are available for chemistry students in The Chemistry Learning Center, J 1029, during most of each school day. Additional tutoring is offered through CCAPP and several undergraduate research programs.

Graduate Programs

The Chemistry Department offers a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in Chemistry. The American Chemical Society Committee on Professional Training in 1995 ranked us in the upper 5% (15th out of 317 reporting schools) in terms of the number of masters' graduates in chemistry. In conjunction with the City University, we also offer the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree.

Information about graduate programs and graduate fellowships is available in the Chemistry Office, J1024, and is posted on the halls of the 10-13th floors.

Alumni

We have a cadre of loyal alumni, including four Nobel laureates and various members of the National Academy of Sciences, who support our efforts and come to the college to speak with our students. Some alumni have established scholarships to recognize and encourage achievement and ambition. The City College Chemistry Alumni Association holds an annual dinner at the College and also gives annual awards to distinguished alumni.
