Most of our students participate
in undergraduate research programs under the supervision of outstanding
researchers with active research grants. These students are not just
bottle washers -- they participate fully in their research projects,
and their work is published in leading scientific journals and presented
at regional and national meetings. Participation in undergraduate research
is instrumental in obtaining jobs as well as strengthening applications
to medical and graduate schools. Students may receive credit for research
work by enrolling in the Honors Program or the Independent Study Program
with permission of the Undergraduate Research Supervisor. Research students
are trained to design experiments, to keep laboratory notebooks, to
make oral and poster presentations of their work, and to write reports
and research papers. A research report is required for every term in
which a grade is given. In order to graduate "with Honors" a student
must earn 9 credits of "A" in research courses and submit an Honors
paper in research publication format. Honors' students are expected
to present their results on Scholars' Day each year. Preparing this
and other presentations is an important part of the training for presentations
at national meetings. Many of our undergraduate research students receive
financial support from various programs in the Department and College.
