  • Mar. 2005: Chemistry major Lev Sviridov became the first Rhodes scholar of CCNY since 1939. Biochemistry major Philipa Njau won a prestigious Goldwater scholarship. High school student David Bauer won the top INTEL Science Prize for research conducted under the supervision of Prof. Valeria Balogh-Nair. Wow !

  • December 9, 2002 The department held a retirement party for Prof. Stanley Radel, Prof. Henri Rosano, Prof. Michael Wiener, Joe LaRubbio, and Rudy Lopez. President Williams, Dean Tamargo, and many former students gave their best wishes.

  • September 2002 The department welcomes Ronnie Ghose as a new faculty in biomolecular NMR. Ronnie obtained his B.Sc. and M.S. in India and a Ph.D. in Chemical Physics from Yale University. Since 1999 he has been a postdoctoral fellow with David Cowburn at Rockefeller University. His arrival, together with the establishment of the New York Structural Biology Center on the CCNY campus, will help strengthen biochemical and biophysical research at CCNY.

  • Nov 30, 2000 Congratulations to Prof. Maria Tamargo on her recent election to Fellowship in the American Physical Society. Her citation reads as follows: "For significant original contributions to the development and understanding of the growth and properties of novel semiconductor materials and heterostructures, in particular, in the field of wide bandgap II-VI compounds."

  • Nov 1, 2000 A memorial in honor of Abraham Mazur , former chair of the Chemistry department and a builder of the Biochemistry Program at CCNY included a lecture on superoxide dismutase by alumnus and National Academy of Science member Irwin Fridovich and tributes by current and former members of the Chemistry faculty.

  • Sep 11, 2000 Congratulations to Prof. Daniel Akins on his receipt of the NSF's 2000 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring!

  • June 22, 2000 A distinguished Chemistry department alumnus, Dr. Elvin Abraham Kabat, passed away today. He graduated from City College in 1932 and received a master's and a doctorate in biochemistry at Columbia University, which he later joined as a member of the faculty. He made significant contributions to the field of immunology and the fundamental understanding of antibodies. Dr. Kabat was a member of the National Academy of Science and received the National Medal of Science in 1991.

  • May 19, 2000 Congratulations to Yoshi Inuzuka for winning the Marshak award! Yoshi is starting work on his Ph.D. in the Chemistry department at Harvard University in the fall.

  • May 1, 2000 Dr. Mahesh K. Lakshman, an organic chemist, accepted an offer and will join the Chemistry Department in the Fall. Dr. Lakshman obtained his B.S. in 1982 and his M.Sc. in 1984 at the University of Bombay in India and his Ph.D. at the University of Oklahoma in 1989. He was a Fogarty fellow at the National Institutes of Health from 1989 to 1994 and a senior scientist with Chemsyn Science Labs from 1994 to 1997. From 1997 till now he has been an assistant professor at the University of North Dakota.
