The Shape of (Fragrant) Things. Molecular modeling of linear (top) and cyclic (bottom) aldehyde fragrance molecules synthesized in Prof. Kevin Ryan's lab and featured in the December issue of Chemistry and Biology (Cell Press). The background shows rat olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) glowing via calcium imaging in response to the new cyclic compounds. Yellow shading highlights portions of the molecular structures critical for triggering the biochemistry of the sense of smell in these OSNs. Click here for the link to the CCNY press release.
