The CCAPP program provides science, architecture and pre medical and
allied health professions students with a supportive community of
fellow students, faculty and staff that enriches their lives, promotes
their academic success and prepares them for entry into professional
careers and/or graduate programs. CCAPP serves students through out
their college careers.
Summer
Program for Entering Students
This
is a program to prepare students for their first college level science
courses and to give them a head start in their majors. It is an intensive
four-week problem solving experience that weaves the teaching of problem
solving techniques with content in chemistry and physics. The techniques
are also applied to projects based upon engineering design problems.
Students work in teams led by City College upperclassmen To see the
schedule click here.
- Problem
Solving Instruction in Science
In the morning data is gathered from experiments in chemistry or
physics or from project assignments. Post experiment discussions
emphasize the relationship between the data gathered and the concepts
upon which they are based, and allow students to arrive at a firm
understanding of the scientific concepts. The afternoon is devoted
to solving the problems introduced in the morning. These problem-solving
sessions are led by a combination of instructors and student team
leaders.
- Practical
Design Activity
For this activity mathematical solutions are applied to practical
design problems. The problems are constructed so that there can
be several solutions. Student teams set to work on the problem and
prepare a presentation of the solution that may include charts,
graphs and models, and always has a formal write-up.
- Career
Seminars
Weekly seminars introduce students to their majors and future professions
and are organized around career objectives, which correspond to
the students' majors. Students visit college facilities and meet
with professors in their majors.
- Team
Approach
Student teams are organized by majors. The team Leaders are trained
to facilitate a cooperative learning environment by encouraging
students to help each other. Leaders serve as role models for their
students and describe college life as seen through the eyes of a
successful peer. (Back to top)
Academic
support and enrichment activities
During
the fall and spring semesters and intersession CCAPP provides services
to meet the academic needs of students at all stages of their academic
careers.
- Tutorial
Workshops
Workshops are offered in all the required science courses. In addition
to improving grades and enriching the course experience, they promote
good study habits and network building. Students get to know one
another, share experiences, discuss their courses and form study
groups.
- Block
Registration
CCAPP students register early and together for the best instructors
and the same course sections which encourages study group formation.
- Counseling
This service is crucial to the survival of commuter college students
who remain at home, are responsible for family or are independent
and self supporting. Counseling helps students deal with personal
and academic problems that interfere with their academic progress.
- Special
Classes
These are designed to teach students general skills such as time
management and test taking techniques and major specific skills
as instruction in the tools, techniques and graphic standards for
architectural drawing and drafting.
- Student
to Student Mentoring
Upper division student are matched with entering Students so they
can assist them in such things as developing effective study habits
and attitudes and behaviors which will help them balance their personal
lives with their lives as college students. Mentors act as their
guides through the world of college.
- Social
Activities
On and off campus activities are offered as a way of fostering a
feeling of community and increasing ties and friendship bonds among
students.
- Students
Centers
The CCAPP Science Study Center and the CCAPP Architecture Studio
provide students with a Comfortable and secure place to study, to
exchange ideas and experiences and to meet during the week and on
weekends. Tables, chairs and drafting stations are provided, as
well as mailboxes to facilitate communication among CCAPP members.
They provide a place to post notices about scholarships, internships,
meetings, etc. (Back to top)
Professional
and Career development
