Elegant elegans

Neuropeptides are involved in most complex behaviors in mammals and serve as primary and modulatory neurotransmitters in lower organisms.  We are interested in how neuropeptides modulate behavior and are examining their effects in the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans.  Our lab is also interested in determining the function of genes implicated in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s Disease, and are examining the homologous genes in C. elegans.  Although different organisms may use related proteins in different functional contexts, the pathways in which they function and the molecules with which they interact are usually conserved.  Hence, identifying functions and pathways of C. elegans proteins may provide insights into the roles and cellular pathways of the homologous proteins in humans.
